Regulatory Compliance

SPCC & EPA Compliance Made Simple

UltraTech track pans are designed to help comply with the following rules & regulations:

SPCC
Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasure Act — 40 CFR Part 112

SPCC rules require secondary containment for facilities that store or transfer oil above threshold limits. UltraTech track pans are expressly designed to satisfy these requirements at rail loading and off-loading facilities.

EPA
EPA Container Storage Regulation — 40 CFR 264.175 & Stormwater Management 40 CFR 122.26

Facilities subject to EPA stormwater permits (SWPPP) must demonstrate hazardous material containment. Our track pan systems provide documented, auditable secondary containment that satisfies BMP requirements for rail sidings.

OSHA
Workplace Safety — Slip & Fall Prevention

Rail loading areas see high foot and vehicle traffic. All UltraTech track pans feature built-in grating with a slip-resistant diamond-plate texture rated for vehicle drive-over. Employees never walk on exposed liquid. NY State Chemical Bulk Storage Regulation Section 599.17c also satisfied.

UltraTech Polyethylene vs Metal Containment

  • Easy Installation: No forklifts, cranes, or backhoes. Metal rake, shovel, and bar clamps are all you need.
  • Patented Gasket System: Closed-cell PE foam seals against the rail — eliminating the key leak point metal pans can't address.
  • Chemical Resistance: Polyethylene outperforms metal against acids, caustics, corrosives, solvents, oils, and diesel. Zero rust.
  • Grating Included: All pans ship with grating — employees never walk in spilled product. Drive-over rated.
  • Modular & Replaceable: Damage one section? Replace only that piece — not the whole system.
  • Patented Flow-Through: Bulkhead fittings route spills pan-to-pan down to oil/water separators or holding ponds.
  • Low Maintenance: Visual gasket inspection every 6 months. No rust treatment, no repainting.
  • UV Stabilized: UV inhibitor in polyethylene resin for the full 20–30 year work life.

Frequently Asked Questions

01What is the flow rate for each drain?
120 gallons-per-minute (gpm).
02How long will Ultra-Track Pans last in the field?
Under normal working conditions, the Ultra-Track Pan system should last from 20 to 30 years in the field. Due to rugged conditions expected at rail sidings, Ultra-Track Pans are molded in nearly twice the thickness of standard containment products. The black color, combined with a UV ray inhibitor added to the polyethylene (LLDPE) resin, helps protect the system from harmful effects of the sun.
03How much containment capacity do the Ultra-Track Pans have?
Without grates: each Center TrackPan holds 30 gallons; each Side TrackPan holds 25 gallons. Each grate displaces 6 gallons. With grates: Center = 18 gallons, Side = 19 gallons. Ultra-Track Pans connect together with bulkhead fittings — one fitting connects each Side TrackPan "end to end" and two fittings connect each Center TrackPan "end to end". The patented bulkhead fitting design allows spilled fluids to travel from one TrackPan to the next, thereby increasing capacity as the spill travels over the length of the TrackPan system.
04How much maintenance is required to use the Ultra-Track Pans correctly?
The TrackPans are virtually maintenance-free. Visual inspection of the sealing gaskets located between the rails and Pans should take place every six (6) months.
05What are the Ultra-Track Pan sealing gaskets made of?
The gaskets that seal between the Pans and tracks are closed-cell polyethylene foam. The closed-cell material will not soak up any fluid. Standard gaskets for the bulkhead fittings are EPDM. Viton gaskets are available for installations in crude oil loading/off-loading areas. Other materials are available upon request for specific chemical applications.
06What are the Ultra-Track Pans, grates, and bulkhead fittings made of?
All of these items are made of polyethylene. Coupled with the polyethylene track gaskets, the TrackPan product line offers consistent chemical compatibility throughout. Standard gaskets for the bulkhead fittings are EPDM. Other materials are available if necessary.
07How chemically resistant are the Ultra-Track Pans?
The all-polyethylene Ultra-TrackPans offer excellent chemical resistance for a broad range of acids, caustics, corrosives, solvent, oils, diesel fuel, etc. UltraTech's engineering staff is available to review specific chemicals upon request.
08How do the Ultra-Track Pans address OSHA "slip and fall" issues?
All top surfaces of the major TrackPan components feature a slip-resistant design. Grates have a raised, molded-in texture that is very similar to a diamond plate design. The inner surface of all Center and Side TrackPans has a surface that is similar to 80 grit sandpaper.
09What is the working temperature range for Ultra-Track Pans?
-40°F up to +140°F.
10Does "wind chill" have any effect on the Ultra-Track Pans?
No effect.
11What equipment and tools are required to install Ultra-Track Pans?
Metal rake, shovel, sledgehammer, two 12" bar clamps, two pieces of wood 1"×4"×48", two "slip sheets" approx. 10"×60", and a utility knife are typically required. No heavy equipment required.
12Do I need to order gaskets and bulkhead fittings separately?
No. Gaskets and bulkhead fittings are standard components and are packaged inside each TrackPan shipping container. Note: If planning to install below grade piping, 3-diameter bulkhead fittings to connect to piping must be ordered separately.
13How are the Ultra-Track Pans shipped?
Each TrackPan is boxed separately to assure they are protected properly during shipment. The modular units stack neatly on wooden shipping pallets via LTL or full truckload shipments, depending on the size of the order.
14Have the Ultra-Track Pans been designed to connect to "below grade" piping?
Yes. All center and side track pans are molded with pipe fitting locators at their lowest point. Below grade piping can be installed to channel large spills to oil/water separators, holding ponds, etc. The patented bulkhead fitting design allows pans to be connected end-to-end.
15Why are there multiple pipe recesses molded into each Ultra-Track Pan?
Multiple recesses are provided to accommodate multiple drains in as many pans sections as desired. This allows for greater flexibility in system design and drainage routing.
16Do I have to connect the Ultra-Track Pans to below-grade piping?
No. The TrackPans may be used independently without below-grade piping. However, if you anticipate large spills, it is strongly recommended that you consider installing below grade piping to channel spills to a safe area away from the rail siding.
17Can Ultra-Track Pans be installed on a curved track?
Yes. Contact our team with your curve radius details. UltraTech will provide a drawing that details a cutaway of a standard rail and tie plate and will request two specified dimensions to determine the correct gasket design required for your installation.
18Can Ultra-Track Pans be installed on any tracks, regardless of rail weight?
Ultra-Track Pans have been successfully installed on rails as light as 65 lb. (Rail weight is defined as the number of pounds per yard of rail length.) All rails greater than 65 lb. work very well with Ultra-Track Pans. Rails that are less than 65 lbs. are not feasible as the rails are too short to allow proper clearance.
19Does UltraTech need to know the rail weight or dimensions when ordering?
Yes. UltraTech will provide a drawing that details a cutaway of a standard rail and tie plate. They will request that two specified dimensions be provided. These dimensions determine the correct gasket design that the installation will require.
20What length TrackPan System handles a typical railcar or locomotive?
Railroad tanker cars typically range from 35 to 60 feet. Each Ultra-TrackPan is 53.5" (4½ nominal feet) long and can be configured to virtually any length desired. A 9-foot System uses two (2) Center Pans and four (4) Side Pans. A 40-foot System uses nine (9) Center Pans and eighteen (18) Side Pans. A 60-foot System uses fourteen (14) Center Pans and twenty-eight (28) Side Pans. Locomotives typically require a 60-foot TrackPan System.
21Can vehicles be driven over the Ultra-Track Pans?
Yes, provided: (1) TrackPan Grates are in place in each pan; (2) Adequate support (compacted soil) is provided under each Pan; (3) If side pans are installed, concrete must be poured to "ramp up" to the outer sidewalls of the Side Pans. Vehicle weight limitation is dependent on the strength of the bedding material under the Pans — UltraTech engineers are available to provide guidance.
22When clean stormwater (rain) falls on top of TrackPans, where does the water go?
Side TrackPans are positioned at a slight angle, sloping away from the tracks, so rain cannot channel off to either side. Center TrackPans have a patented means to channel clean stormwater onto the ballast beneath the Center TrackPans, keeping rain out of the Center TrackPans and your railcar spill containment intact.
